Reading and Phonics

Here at St John's CE (C) School teaching children to become independent readers and to foster a love of books is a high priority.  It is expected that these values are promoted in the home and that children practise daily.

Children are taught to read primarily using a phonics based approach following the Letters and Sounds Programme where they are taught to blend words using their sounds and to recognise tricky words on sight. In school the Oxford Reading Tree scheme supports the children carefully in their reading development. We have a wide range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry books which are chosen carefully to match the needs of each individual child and ensure that they make progress. Rewards are given to those children who continue their reading development at home.

To further develop comprehension skills books from the Project X and Rigby guided reading schemes as well as other texts are used during group reading sessions.

In order to inspire a love of books a wide range of good quality texts are used throughout the curriculum. In addition Children are encouraged to use the school library on a weekly basis to select books which interest them and to share them at home with their family.
